About

Welcome to my blog. This is where I post random thoughts about stuff I’m interested in. This broadly fits into 2 categories: technology(gadgets) and woodwork. I am a software engineer by profession and a (very) amateur carpenter and more recently woodturner. I am not a professional woodworker/turner, I have no training and anything I post about having tried is not intended to suggest that it is a good or sensible approach. It’s just stuff I’ve done. If anyone wants to post thoughts/comments on either please feel free.

    Daniel,
I am an IT director that is also president of uor local woodturners group. I am trying to get my club to use the WordPress features I have set up for them. Not having much success. ANy ideas? Also, I like the idea of a form to fill out for show-n-tell. Can you tell me what is on it? (or a pdf maybe) We have some realy yakkers that go on for too long during show-n-tell and I need some ‘tool’ to bring thier monologues to a close.

Your blog is a good read and very helpful. If you have other suggestions I’d love to hear from you.

    Robert

The form is just a simple piece of paper that has your name, what the item is, what wood it’s made of, what finish you used, your inspiration if any. They all also have a number on, printed twice in tabs, one of which is torn off and put in a bowl. We normally invite teh demonstrator for the evening to provide a critque of the gallery and pick a number from the bowl, selected person wins £10 (this is an encouragement for people to actually put things in the gallery)
Glad you find the blog helpful ;-)

oh… as for using wordpress. I just set it up for my club, and now I am their webmaster, none of them use it to add content, they just e-mail me what they want up, and I do it. I have started to suggest in comittee meetings that others might like to have a go at doing this, but just gently suggesting at the moment. ;-)

    Hi Daniel

Simple question – can you please direct me to where I can download Witter. I just bought an N900 and am very keen to try Witter.

    Thanks!

    Scott

you need to enable the extras-testing respository on your n900 application manager. This program has not yet made it through the full QA process to be made available in the ‘extras’ repository which is enabled by default. Though there are a number of people working with it ok. There are some warnings about using extras-testing (and for the very brave extras-devel) in that by definition things there may still have potentially serious bugs. In my case witter won’t do anything nasty, it’s just that occasionally (as with last night) I break the version at extras-devel. See talk.maemo.org for more details about the repositories, but basically you have one defined at the moment which you can copy the details for, and instead of ‘extras’ put extras-testing. when you have that witter will show up under the network category to be installed, and will then pickup updates whenever I push a new one to extras-testing

    hello
I am a big user of witter
but since I upgrade to the last version it stopped working on my n900
    should reinstall?
I have ran witter from the terminal, where should I send you the info that I got from the terminal? cheers

a re-install won’t help you, if it’s failing at startup it’s likely due to some state in the config files that aren’t deleted on upgrade/uninstall etc.
hopefully the last thing in the log is a fairly obvious error with a list of code files and line numbers etc, if so just stick that in a comment. but otherwise use pastebin.com to paste the log and send me a link to it.

usual caution, you are using versions of witter from the extras-development repository, I make no assurances not to break this at any time.

    Hi,

Just read your blog about lasik. It is something I am interested in and was wondering if you went to any other providers e.g. Optimax or Optical Express before choosing Ultralase? I also live in Southampton.

    Thanks,

I did a fair amount of reading, but didn’t go and talk to any other provider.

    hello
are you still working on witter?
I liked the feature of email style notifications when I had a reply but witter stopped working when I updated to the last version.

I’m not still working on witter, however I recently approved a couple of new maintainers so there are some people from the maemo.org forums looking to continue working on it.
