  • Bottle stoppers

Last month’s project given to the newbies by Harry at the Hampshire woodturners group was to make bottle stoppers.

  • It starts with a drawing…

Actually that’s not strictly true, it starts with the spark of an idea.

  • Wood turning practice

I’m getting to spend more of my own time on my wood working projects. Well I say ‘projects’ but it’s really just practice, and I really need it! I am sometimes enormously frustrated by the mistakes I continue to make

  • Decking video

Last night Kat got around to cutting together the time lapse stuff of us building the decking, and we’ve uploaded it to YouTube:

  • Tool of the week: The Bosch GSR ‘professional’

OK, so now I’ve actually finished the decking – screwing in the final screw about 30 mins ago. Whilst we were out earlier Kat and I did some maths, and realised that we used about 700 screws in total for the decking.

  • Decking finished!

Decking project is now complete (well ish). Three days of labouring in the sunshine, which was very hot work but actually really nice in many ways. It’s great to be out of the office, doing something constructive.

  • The great decking project

I’ve lived in my house for a couple of years now and I’ve always meant to get around to doing something with the garden.

  • New toys, and a new project

Today has been a good day for both my geek side and my DIY side.

  • Hants woodturners

The other week I was looking for places I could go to see wood turning being demonstrated, and a bit of Googling turned up http://www.hants-woodturners-hwa.co.uk/. I was very happy to discover this group meets not more than 10 minutes walk from my house.

  • Re-inventing the wheel

I have for some time been playing with woodturning on a lathe I got from my father. He gave it to me with a box of bits, some scraps of wood, some chisels, sharpening stones, oils… and a book. Keen to get going I leaped into action setting everything up and having a go.
